Virginia Data Reconstruction

Virginia's first reported COVID-19 case was on March 7th 2020. I began pulling the daily VDH COVID-19 data on March 27th. Hence, information for the dates between March 7th and March 26th need to be determined.

As VDH does not publish historic case data, we need need to reconstruct the data ourselves. Due to difference in available information between each jurisdiction, we need to take a different approach for each one.

  • City of Alexandria- The city publishes a daily summary ("City News Releases") of information related to COVID-19 in the form of a press release, including new case data. However, due to differences between when the City identifies cases and when it was reported to VDH, there is sometimes a lag or latency. For Alexandria, thus, I relied mostly on a handful of press reports, such as ARLnow.com and the Prince William Times (see below).
  • Arlington County - The news organization ARLnow.com has been publishing near-daily updated on new COVID-19 case information in Arlington based upon VDH's daily updates. Hence, the archives of ARLnow.com function as an effective historic dataset for Arlington's cases. In some occasions, these articles also mention case information in neighborhood Alexandria.
  • City of Fairfax - The City of Fairfax, and the City of Falls Church both fall under VDH's "Fairfax" health division. For this reason, and to avoid having very-small jurisdictions take up space in my charts, I will follow this approach (much like with Manassas and Manassas Park being bundled with Prince William County).
  • Fairfax County - The Fairfax County government hosts a blog which covers a number of COVID-19 related topics, including new case information, which have been updated on a near-daily basis. These numbers correspond precisely with the daily-published VDH data, so unlike Alexandria's updates, they require no further analysis. Of note, the City of Fairfax and the City of Falls Church are both reported under totals for Fairfax County, as they are all members of the VDH's "Fairfax" health division.
  • City of Falls Church - The City of Fairfax, and the City of Falls Church both fall under VDH's "Fairfax" health division. For this reason, and to avoid having very-small jurisdictions take up space in my charts, I will follow this approach (much like with Manassas and Manassas Park being bundled with Prince William County).
  • Loudoun County - Two media sources, loudounnow.com, and the Prince William Times provided the bulk of data for Loudoun County. Both sources provided updates using VDH data for Loudoun County and other jurisdictions.
  • City of Manassas - The City of Manassas, and the City of Manassas Park both fall under VDH's "Prince William" health division. For this reason, and to avoid having very-small jurisdictions take up space in my charts, I will follow this approach (much like with Falls Church and Fairfax City being bundled with Fairfax County).
  • City of Manassas Park - The City of Manassas, and the City of Manassas Park both fall under VDH's "Prince William" health division. For this reason, and to avoid having very-small jurisdictions take up space in my charts, I will follow this approach (much like with Falls Church and Fairfax City being bundled with Fairfax County).
