May 31st Data Update

This post updates COVID-19 confirmed case data for the DC Metropolitan area as of May 31st 2021, accounting for 29, 30, and 31 MayThe total confirmed cases in the DC area rose by 434 (effective daily increase of 145) t419,611 from the previous total of 419,177. Fatalities rose by 12 (effective daily increase of 4) t7,215 from the previous total of 7,203.

Please note that as of this weekend, DC Health no longer releases standalone data for Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, and is instead opting to release a single datum for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday collectively. I will amend my own analysis to fit this cycle, even though Maryland and Virginia continue to release individual data points for those days.

To account for this, I will note the "effective daily increase" across the weekend. In other words, I will calculate a three-day moving average (rounded to the nearest whole number) for the days of Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Monday-Thursday will continue to receive daily reports, hence 5 per week from here on out.

  1. Thanks for your work! Please keep it up even as we're doing better over the summer - constant surveillance with reliable data is key as we head into the fall (I predict a seasonal resurgence). Yours is the only site I check daily for numbers that are most relevant to the area.

    1. Thank you kindly for your continued readership. The change to DC's reporting protocol certainly complicates my method, but I should be able to largely keep on doing what I've been doing.

If we get to a point where daily cases get very low (i.e. well under 100 per day) on a consistent basis, I may switch to weekly updates. But that will come when it comes.
