January 17th Data Update

This post updates COVID-19 confirmed case data for the DC Metropolitan area as of January 17th 2021. The total confirmed cases in the DC area rose by 4,870 to 298,953 from the previous total of 294,083, an increase of approximately 2%. Fatalities rose by 13 to 5,112 from the previous total of 5,099.

4,870 new cases is a new record high (in absolute terms), eclipsing the previous high of 3,087 from 9 January 2021

Note, due to the considerable spike, I double-checked the numbers to confirm their accuracy. The spike was driven in large part by Fairfax County (+1,523) and Prince William County (+1,508), i.e. 3,031 cases in those two jurisdictions alone. I cannot determine at this time if cases in those two areas have just really taken off all of a sudden, or if there are other factors related to data tabulation and/or releasing backlogged data.
